In March 2025, an AI-generated audio clip purporting to be President Trump privately stating he would change Washington D.C.'s name to Washington D.A. (District of America) spread widely across social media platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Bluesky, and X. The fake audio featured a voice resembling Trump's saying 'No more Washington, D.C. I hate it. It makes no sense. They call it the District of Columbia. It's got nothing to do with Colombia. It's nowhere near Colombia. From now on, it will be Washington, D.A., District of America. No more of this Colombian nonsense.' The content was first published by a now-deleted TikTok account @whmole (apparently short for 'White House mole') that had previously created other fake Trump audio clips. The audio spread across multiple platforms, with one X post receiving 1 million views and 15,000 likes in five days, and TikTok videos garnering hundreds of thousands of views. Both liberal users who criticized the supposed policy and conservative supporters who praised it shared the content, believing it to be authentic. University of Michigan-Dearborn computer engineering professor Hafiz Malik confirmed to NewsGuard that the audio was 'definitely an AI-generated (deepfake) audio of President Donald Trump' based on forensic analysis. The fake audio concept may have originated from a sarcastic February 18 X post by comedian Greg Fitzsimmons who mentioned 'District of America' before the AI audio was created.
