Brandon Tyler used AI to create deepfake pornography of 20 women from their social media images and posted them on a forum glorifying rape culture, resulting in harassment and distress to victims.
Brandon Tyler, a 26-year-old bar worker from Braintree, Essex, used artificial intelligence to manipulate images from women's social media pages to create deepfake pornography between March 2023 and May 2024. Tyler targeted 20 women in 173 online posts, using AI to remove clothing from bikini photos and creating explicit images including one of a 16-year-old girl on her prom night. He posted these images on a forum that glorified 'rape culture' and sexual violence against women, accompanied by degrading comments asking which victims 'deserved to be gang raped.' Tyler also posted victims' names, social media handles, and phone numbers online to maximize distress and humiliation. He was caught when he accidentally included his own Instagram handle in a screenshot. Tyler was sentenced to five years in jail after admitting to 18 counts of causing harassment without violence and 15 counts of sharing intimate photos for sexual gratification. Victims reported receiving anonymous sexual comments and phone calls, with one stating her long-term relationship ended as a result. The sharing of sexually explicit deepfake images became a criminal offense in England and Wales under the Online Safety Act in April 2023.
