A Louisville mother received a fraudulent phone call where scammers used AI voice-cloning technology to impersonate her 10-year-old daughter's voice, claiming she was in an accident and had been kidnapped to extort money or compliance from the mother.
Kim Alvey, a Louisville mother, received a phone call on Tuesday afternoon that appeared to be from her 10-year-old daughter claiming to be in a car accident and needing help. The voice sounded exactly like her daughter, crying and frantic, saying 'mom, mom please help me' and 'I just got in an accident. Somebody hit me in a car, and you need to get here as quick as possible.' A man then took over the call, identifying himself as 'Hector' and threatening to kidnap her daughter, warning 'If you call the police, you're not gonna get your daughter back. Right now I have her in my car, you come to me right now, and you're gonna get her.' Alvey immediately hung up and called her daughter's school, where she confirmed her daughter was safe. The FBI has issued warnings about criminals using artificial intelligence to clone voices for these types of scams, generating short audio clips containing a loved one's voice to impersonate relatives in crisis situations. The scammer called from a 502 area code and called back multiple times after the initial incident. No money was actually transferred or demanded during the call.
