Scammers used AI to create elaborate fake business websites with detailed company information, policies, and employee profiles to support investment fraud schemes targeting potential victims through cold calls.
Scammers contacted potential victims through cold calls claiming to represent marketing agency Assent Advisory to promote investment opportunities. The scammers directed victims to sophisticated websites for APPC Capital Singapore and Thackeray Mines and Minerals Inc. that appeared to be created using AI. These websites featured business registration numbers, detailed weekly blog posts, board member profiles with photos and university credentials, mining site locations, and company policy documents. The level of detail was convincing enough that even a fraud analyst initially found the sites credible. APPC Capital Singapore had an active business registration with Singapore's ACRA but lacked the required investment license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The ABC's fact-checking revealed that images, people, and locations on the sites were likely AI-generated or fabricated. Investment scams cost Australians $945 million in 2024, representing nearly half of total scam losses of $2.03 billion. Experts noted that AI is making it easier for criminals to create convincing websites, policies, images, and financial reports, making traditional due diligence insufficient for detection.
