Someone created an AI deepfake image of Katy Perry at the 2024 Met Gala, which fooled her mother into believing Perry had actually attended the event.
On May 6, 2024, an AI-generated deepfake image was created showing Katy Perry at the Met Gala, despite the fact that she did not actually attend the event. The fake image showed Perry wearing a dress that appeared to fit the 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' theme, but it was entirely AI-generated and not even on the correct carpet from the actual event. Perry's mother, Mary Perry, was deceived by the deepfake and sent her daughter a text message commenting on how gorgeous the gown looked and comparing her to 'the Rose Parade' and 'your own float.' Perry discovered the AI deepfake had fooled her mother and posted about it on Instagram, warning 'lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!' Perry captioned her Instagram post explaining she 'couldn't make it to the MET, had to work' and showed she was actually in a recording studio. The incident demonstrates how AI-generated images can successfully deceive people, even close family members, into believing false information about public events.
