Scammers used AI technology to create deepfake videos of two Houston women's friends, tricking them into sharing access codes that compromised their Facebook accounts and enabled fraudulent sales posts that defrauded other victims of hundreds of dollars.
Two Houston area women, Stacey Svegliato and Sara Sandlin, were targeted by scammers using AI-generated deepfake videos. The scammers created convincing video calls on Facebook Messenger that appeared to show their friends asking for help with hacked accounts. Both women received what looked and sounded like their friends saying 'Hey, my Facebook's been hacked' and requesting access codes. After the victims shared these codes, fraudulent posts appeared on their Facebook pages selling vehicles, appliances, and furniture supposedly belonging to their fathers. The scammers then used AI to create deepfake videos of the victims themselves, which were sent to their friends to perpetuate the fraud. Some friends were deceived and sent hundreds of dollars for the fake items. Cybersecurity expert Dominic Chorafakis explained that scammers can use publicly posted videos or even still images to create convincing AI avatars with lip-syncing technology. Both victims were locked out of their Facebook accounts and lost access to family photos. The incident demonstrates how easily accessible AI tools can be used to create convincing impersonations for financial fraud.
