A 16-year-old boy died by suicide after being targeted in a sextortion scheme where criminals used AI-generated explicit images of him to extort $3,000, leading to his death within an hour of receiving the threatening messages.
On February 28, Elijah Heacock, a 16-year-old sophomore at Caverna High School in Glasgow, Kentucky, died by suicide after being targeted in a sextortion scheme. The perpetrators used AI-generated explicit images of Elijah to conduct financial extortion, demanding $3,000. According to his parents and FBI officials, all of the explicit photos were 'completely fabricated' and AI-generated. After sending $50 that he received from an older brother, Elijah attempted to take his life within one hour of receiving the threatening messages. He was rushed to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and then airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital, where he died the next morning. The FBI confirmed that Elijah was likely a target in a sextortion scheme and placed his phone on airplane mode to preserve evidence. FBI officials indicated that this could be part of a network involved in such crimes. According to FBI reports, more than 13,000 reports of financial sextortion were reported nationwide between October 2021 and March 2023, with crimes most often impacting teenage boys ages 14-17. In Kentucky, more than 300 offenders have been arrested in connection with sextortion cases since 2019.
