Malicious actors created AI-generated deepfake videos falsely showing Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus endorsing gambling apps, using manipulated footage from legitimate news interviews to deceive social media users.
In June 2025, the Chief Adviser's Press Wing in Bangladesh issued a warning about AI-generated deepfake videos targeting social media users. The videos falsely showed Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus endorsing gambling applications, particularly one called Blue Live and another called Crazy Time Bangladesh. A specific example involved a deepfake video shared by Facebook user Jwfrh Hibbert on June 14, 2025, where manipulated footage made Prof Yunus appear to promote a government-launched investment app promising users over 555,000 BDT returns in the first week. Investigation revealed the video was AI-manipulated using footage from an Al Jazeera interview from April 27, 2025, recorded at their Doha headquarters. The fake video also illegitimately used the bdnews24.com logo despite that outlet never releasing such content. The Facebook account posting the content was created on June 14, 2022, appeared to be operated by multiple users based in Lithuania, and had only four posts all promoting gambling apps. Another deepfake used footage from a News24 YouTube video from August 10 titled 'Rangpur must become the number one district: Dr. Yunus' to create false gambling advertisements. The press wing noted this was not an isolated incident, with numerous similar deepfake videos appearing across Meta's platforms since the interim government formed in August 2024.
