Vietnamese students used AI systems including ChatGPT, StudyX, and Gemini to cheat on national high school graduation exams by transmitting test questions outside exam rooms for AI-generated answers.
During Vietnam's national high school graduation exam in June 2024, multiple students were caught using AI systems to cheat across different exam centers. In Lam Dong province, an 18-year-old male student purchased wireless earphones and a button-sized camera through Facebook, concealed the devices on his body, and smuggled them into the exam room along with his phone. About 15-20 minutes into the Literature exam, he activated the camera to stream questions outside to a 17-year-old accomplice at an internet cafe, who used ChatGPT to solve the questions and read answers back. The accomplice was initially distracted by gaming and only noticed the exam video 45 minutes later, capturing just two pages. In separate incidents in Hanoi, two other students smuggled mobile phones into exam rooms and photographed Math, Chemistry, Physics, History, and English test papers, uploading images to AI applications StudyX and Gemini for answers. One student was able to write only two AI-generated answers before detection, while exam proctors failed to properly suspend him after initial detection. The incidents raised concerns about exam security and integrity, with police investigating the students for 'deliberate disclosure of classified information' and 'appropriation of classified documents.' Over 1.16 million Vietnamese students took the national exam, which serves as both graduation requirement and university entrance qualification.
