Scammers used deepfake technology to create manipulated videos and audio recordings falsely depicting Lance Gokongwei endorsing cryptocurrency investment schemes, leading to financial fraud targeting victims through social media platforms.
The Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines issued a warning about scammers utilizing deepfake technology to create fraudulent videos and audio recordings. These manipulated materials falsely depicted Lance Gokongwei, head of the Gokongwei Group and CEO of JG Summit Holdings Inc., endorsing investment schemes involving cryptocurrency, forex, and other digital assets. The deceptive content was circulated on social media platforms to mislead individuals into investing in non-existent or illicit ventures. Victims were directed to invest through an electronic platform registered in Nicosia, Cyprus, and were instructed to provide their credit card numbers and One-Time Passwords (OTP) sent to their mobile phones. After making investments, victims lost contact with online agents when they attempted to withdraw money from their accounts. The SEC advised the public to avoid interacting with suspicious advertisements and to verify investment opportunities through official channels.
