A pro-Russian YouTube network operating from Nigeria used AI-generated news anchors and synthetic voiceovers to create millions of views of content promoting Kremlin-aligned narratives, denigrating Ukraine, the US, EU, and Israel.
A coordinated network of five YouTube channels operating from Nigeria published videos with AI-generated content that received over 5.8 million views and gained almost 37,400 followers. The channels (@Peace-Crusader, @conflictcompas, @GloryinCombat, @DaddyMaxwell77, and @freshinfoinsight) used AI-generated news anchors and synthetic voiceovers to create the false impression of live television interviews featuring Scott Ritter and Douglas Macgregor, both known for pro-Kremlin narratives. The channels displayed coordinated inauthentic behavior with nearly identical biographies, video descriptions, hashtags, and titles. Researchers identified three Nigerian operators who appear to be brothers based on publicly exposed email addresses and social media profiles. The network also incorporated synthetic voiceovers across all videos and used formulaic thumbnails. An extended network of seven additional channels was identified with similar content patterns but operators based in other countries including Pakistan. The channels successfully monetized their content through YouTube's paid membership system, suggesting financial motivation, though researchers assess the most likely explanation is that the network forms part of a Russian influence operation given historical precedent of Russia outsourcing operations to Nigerian proxies.
