Jonathan Rinderknecht allegedly used ChatGPT to generate an image of a burning city months before deliberately starting the Palisades fire in Los Angeles, which killed 31 people and destroyed over 15,000 buildings.
On New Year's Day 2024, Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Florida man working as an Uber driver, allegedly deliberately started the Palisades fire on federal land with hiking trails in Los Angeles. Federal prosecutors claim that months earlier, on July 11, 2024, Rinderknecht had used ChatGPT to generate an image of a dystopian burning city scene. After starting the fire, he made incriminating searches on ChatGPT, including asking 'Are you at fault if a fire is lift because of your cigarettes?' He called 911, relocated to a vantage point to watch firefighters, and recorded video of the response. The initial fire appeared to be extinguished but smoldered under vegetation and reignited on January 7. The Palisades fire ultimately killed 12 people and burned 6,000 buildings. Simultaneously, the Los Angeles area was affected by the Eaton fire, which killed 19 people and destroyed 9,400 structures. Rinderknecht has been charged by the Department of Justice with maliciously starting the fire.
