A Norwegian student used AI-generated deepfake videos to submit Spanish language assignments, creating fake videos of herself speaking Spanish with artificial voice and manipulated facial features, leading to her being found guilty of academic fraud and suspended for one year.
At the University of Southeast Norway's Spanish annual study program in autumn 2023, a student submitted three AI-generated deepfake videos as coursework and exam submissions. The videos showed the student speaking Spanish with perfect pronunciation but making elementary errors, systematic English accent on certain words, and artificial-looking facial features with poor lip-sync. The faculty noticed the inconsistent language level, artificial voice quality, and manipulated appearance of the videos. Since this was a distance learning program and the student had never attended in-person sessions, faculty had not met her personally. When called for a meeting to verify her Spanish speaking ability, the student did not respond. The case was treated as academic fraud and handled by the Student Affairs Committee, which determined the videos were fake deepfakes. The student reportedly admitted to using artificial intelligence in creating the submissions. She was found guilty of academic fraud, resulting in annulment of two coursework assignments and one exam, plus suspension for both semesters of 2024. The student subsequently withdrew from the study program.
