A middle school student used AI technology to create pornographic deepfake images of up to 12 underage female classmates at Newtown Middle School in March 2024.
In March 2024, a student at Newtown Middle School in the Council Rock School District allegedly used AI technology to create pornographic deepfake images of classmates. The incident involved as many as 12 underage girls who had their photos used to create fake nude images. It is not immediately known if the images were shared with others or made available online. The matter was reported to Newtown Township police by Council Rock staff and is under active investigation by both local police and the Bucks County District Attorney's Office. The investigation involves a juvenile, so limited information is being released. If confirmed, this could be among the first prosecutions under Pennsylvania's new law that outlawed the distribution of pornographic deepfakes, which was enacted in response to similar incidents including one in Westfield, New Jersey in 2023. The law makes it a crime to harass someone by distributing deepfake images without consent while depicting nudity or sexual acts, with more serious penalties when victims are minors.
