A 71-year-old man named Ray was defrauded of approximately $20,000 through a deepfake video on Instagram featuring Elton John that promoted a fake online store business opportunity.
A deepfake video featuring music legend Elton John was posted on Instagram, promoting what appeared to be a legitimate business opportunity to earn $25,000 to $30,000 monthly through setting up an online store. Ray, a 71-year-old part-time worker from Northeast Ohio, believed the video was genuinely Elton John and was convinced by the offer. He was connected with two representatives who claimed to be from the company supplying products for the online store. These representatives, who Ray later discovered lived on a chicken farm in the Philippines, had him open a bank account and obtain credit cards with U.S. Bank and Apple. The representatives then charged approximately $20,000 to Ray's credit cards before he realized the scheme was fraudulent. The incident forced Ray to return to full-time work to pay off the debt. One credit card company has since credited his account $9,400, and he is working with other creditors to recover his money. This type of fraud is categorized as a 'push button scam' where victims are tricked into authorizing payments under false pretenses.
