Deepfake videos of Sudha Murty were created using AI technology to promote fraudulent investment schemes, resulting in at least one person losing Rs 43 lakh after being deceived by the fake endorsements.
Deepfake videos of Rajya Sabha MP and Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty went viral on social media, showing her promoting fake investment opportunities. The AI-generated videos showed Murty urging people to click links for investment platforms, specifically promoting 'Quantum AI India' with promises of returns of Rs 10 lakh per month. The deepfake videos directed viewers to fake websites designed to steal personal details and defraud investors. This was not an isolated incident, as similar deepfake videos had appeared previously in February showing Murty encouraging investments of Rs 21,000 with guaranteed returns. At least one victim, a 59-year-old man from Pune, fell prey to these deepfake scams after seeing advertisements on Instagram, losing Rs 43 lakh after initially investing Rs 21,000 based on promises of Rs 17 lakh returns. Murty confirmed the videos were fake and expressed concern about AI-generated content using her likeness, stating she would never promote investments and advising people to verify with banks before making financial decisions.
