Criminals used AI to generate nude photos of a Wichita resident by placing his face on fake bodies in his own home, then threatened to send these images to his family and friends unless he paid money.
In Wichita, Kansas, a resident named Neal Zoglmann received threatening text messages from an unknown number containing AI-generated nude photos that appeared to show him in various rooms of his house including his bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The photos were created by placing Zoglmann's face, likely taken from his social media profiles, onto fake nude bodies. The criminals also included screenshots of his Facebook profile, friend list, and family members' profiles, threatening to send the fabricated images to these contacts unless he paid money. Zoglmann recognized the photos as fake due to watermarks and other inconsistencies, noting that while his face was recognizable, the body was not his. Despite knowing the images were artificial, he was concerned about potential damage to his career and relationships if they were distributed. The Wichita Police Department stated they had never encountered this type of AI-powered extortion scheme before. Zoglmann filed a police report and blocked the threatening phone numbers, after which he received no further messages.
