Consumer Lisa Swearingen from Eagle Mountain saw these fake endorsement videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels and purchased several bottles for over $400, believing she was buying supplements containing 'four ingredients: Himalayan pink salt, quercetin, mountain root and burnt berberine.' When the products arrived, she discovered they contained primarily turmeric, a common spice worth much less than what she paid. The Better Business Bureau has logged numerous similar complaints about turmeric-based products being misrepresented. The real Oprah Winfrey posted on social media warning that her name and likeness were being used without consent to pitch weight loss products, stating 'I have nothing to do with weight loss gummies or diet pills.' Cybersecurity experts note that deepfakes have become increasingly difficult to detect and can be created with relatively little source material.
