A viral AI-generated video falsely showed India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing a fraudulent high-return investment scheme, which was debunked by the government's fact-checking unit PIB Fact Check.
In April 2024, a fake AI-generated video went viral showing India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appearing to endorse a fraudulent investment scheme. The video claimed that an investment of Rs 22,000 could yield returns of Rs 5.5 lakh within a week. The government's fact-checking arm PIB Fact Check debunked the video on social media platform X, clarifying that it was fake and generated using artificial intelligence. The agency emphasized that neither the Government of India nor the Finance Minister was promoting or endorsing any such investment scheme. PIB Fact Check urged citizens to remain cautious of misleading content circulating online and advised them to verify such claims through official government sources before making any financial decisions. The fact-checking unit also appealed to users to report and flag suspicious content to help curb the spread of misinformation. This incident follows a pattern of AI-generated misinformation, as PIB had previously flagged other fake content including phishing attempts targeting bank customers.
