AI-generated deepfake video falsely showed Bulgarian politician Ahmed Dogan calling for protests to protect his wealth, which was initially shared on TikTok as satire but later spread on Facebook by anonymous profiles as if genuine.
A deepfake video was created using artificial intelligence that falsely depicted Ahmed Dogan, honorary chairman of the DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) political party in Bulgaria, calling on party members to protest and protect 'his wealth' from the state. The manipulated video used authentic footage from a Central Operational Bureau meeting of DPS on August 27, 2024, but overlaid AI-generated audio with fabricated speech. The deepfake was first published on TikTok by a satirical profile focused on Ahmed Dogan content. One hour after appearing on TikTok, the video was shared on Facebook by two anonymous profiles: 'Georgi Georgiev' (using a stolen photo of model Kevin Sampaio) and 'Metodi Stoychev' (using a stock photo). Both Facebook profiles were active in groups supporting Delyan Peevski, who was expelled from DPS as co-chairman. The incident was detected and debunked by fact-checkers at Factcheck.bg, who identified the video as AI-manipulated content designed to spread false information about the political figure.
