A 40-year-old South Korean man was arrested for creating and sharing an AI-generated fake image of an escaped wolf, which misled authorities and disrupted their search operation for nine days.
On April 8, 2024, a two-year-old wolf named Neukgu escaped from O-World zoo in Daejeon city, South Korea. During the search operation, a 40-year-old unnamed man created and distributed an AI-generated fake photograph purporting to show the wolf at a road intersection. The fabricated image prompted Daejeon city government to issue emergency text alerts to residents and relocate their search operation to the false location. Authorities presented the AI image during press briefings about the runaway wolf. Police identified the suspect through security camera footage and AI program usage records. When questioned, the man said he created the fake image 'for fun.' The actual wolf was eventually captured near an expressway nine days after his escape. The man faces charges for disrupting government work by deception, which carries penalties of up to five years in prison or a maximum fine of 10 million Korean won ($6,700). The search captured national attention, including from President Lee Jae Myung, and Neukgu has since become a local celebrity with merchandise and potential mascot status.
