Iranian state-aligned media outlets used AI to create fake satellite imagery showing fabricated damage to US military bases, which spread widely on social media and garnered millions of views during the Middle East conflict.
During the US-Israeli war against Iran, Tehran Times, a state-aligned English daily, posted AI-generated satellite imagery on social media platform X claiming to show 'completely destroyed' US radar equipment at a base in Qatar. The image was actually an AI-manipulated version of a Google Earth image from the previous year showing a US base in Bahrain. Visual giveaways included cars parked in identical positions in both authentic and manipulated images. The fabricated image garnered millions of views as it spread across social media in multiple languages. Researchers detected a SynthID watermark identifying the image as created using Google AI. Another AI-generated satellite image purported to show Israeli-US jets targeting painted aircraft silhouettes in Iran, with telltale clues including gibberish coordinates. Open-source intelligence researcher Brady Africk noted an increase in manipulated satellite imagery following major events, with images showing hallmarks of AI generation including odd angles, blurred details, and hallucinated features. Information warfare analyst Tal Hagin warned that disinformation agents are preying upon legitimate open-source intelligence work. Similar fake satellite imagery has appeared following the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the India-Pakistan war.
