Masayuki Nakamoto, a 43-year-old man from Hyogo prefecture, Japan, was arrested for using artificial intelligence to effectively unblur pixelated pornographic videos. Nakamoto operated his own website and used machine learning software similar to deepfake technology to reconstruct the blurred parts of Japanese adult videos based on a large set of uncensored nude images. Japanese law requires pixelation of genitalia in pornographic content due to obscenity laws. Nakamoto reportedly made about 11 million yen ($96,000) by selling over 10,000 manipulated videos online, though he was specifically arrested for selling 10 fake photos at approximately 2,300 yen ($20) each. He pleaded guilty to charges of copyright violation and displaying obscene images, stating he did it for money. The case was discovered during a police 'cyber patrol' and represents the first criminal case in Japan involving exploitative use of AI technology. According to lawyer Daisuke Sueyoshi, there is currently no law in Japan specifically criminalizing the use of AI to make such images, and Nakamoto was not charged with privacy violations against the actors in the videos.
