FindFace is a Russian facial recognition service launched in February 2016 that uses AI to match photographs to people's social media pages on Vkontakte. The service was designed to help users make new friends by identifying people in photos. In April 2016, following media coverage of an art project that demonstrated the invasive potential of the technology, users of the Russian imageboard Dvach launched a campaign to deanonymize actresses who appear in pornography. The users employed FindFace to identify these women by matching pornographic images to their Vkontakte social media profiles. After identification, Dvach users archived copies of the women's social media pages and spammed their families and friends with messages informing them about the discovery. The campaign also targeted women registered on Intimcity, a website that markets prostitution services. The harassers claimed moral outrage as their motivation, stating that women in the sex industry are 'corrupt and deceptive.' A Vkontakte community was created to share archived copies of the women's social media information, but it was quickly banned following complaints. FindFace founder Maxim Perlin acknowledged there was no way to prevent such misuse of the service, though he noted that illegally distributing pornography in Russia is a felony.
