South Korea's antitrust watchdog investigated e-commerce giant Coupang for allegedly manipulating search algorithms to prioritize its own products over suppliers' products, resulting in a 3.29 billion won fine for unfair business practices.
The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) conducted an investigation into Coupang, a major South Korean e-commerce platform, following allegations that the company manipulated its search algorithms to give preferential treatment to its own private label products. The investigation began after LG Household & Health Care filed a complaint in 2019. According to the KFTC findings, from early 2017 to September 2020, Coupang forced hundreds of suppliers including LG Household & Health Care, Yuhan Kimberly, Maeil Dairies, Namyang Dairy Products and Cuchen to comply with unlawful sales and marketing policies. The company allegedly urged suppliers to raise prices of goods sold on rival platforms to ensure Coupang could offer the cheapest prices, coerced suppliers into purchasing advertisements, and made suppliers bear the costs of promotional events. For example, 388 suppliers collectively paid 5.7 billion won for discount coupons on daily necessities and baby products. The KFTC ultimately fined Coupang 3.29 billion won ($2.81 million) for these unfair business practices. This case was notable as it demonstrated an online retailer's predominant position over large companies, similar to what had previously only been seen with department stores and supermarket chains owned by conglomerates.
