Scammers used deepfake technology to create fake video calls impersonating victims' relatives and friends to fraudulently obtain money transfers, with reported losses of VND100 million and VND150 million in specific cases.
In March 2023, multiple incidents occurred in Vietnam where criminals used deepfake technology to conduct sophisticated fraud schemes. In one case, N.C.P. from Thu Duc City received a Facebook message from what appeared to be a relative living abroad asking to borrow VND100 million (US$4,200). When he called to verify via video call, he saw the person's face and heard their voice, leading him to transfer the money. He later discovered the relative's Facebook account had been hacked and the video was created using deepfake technology. Similarly, C.T.N.Y. from District 8 received a request for VND150 million ($6,400) from what appeared to be a close friend. She verified through a video call that showed a blurry image of her friend's face with poor audio quality, which the caller explained was due to weak internet connection. She transferred VND50 million before discovering the fraud. Police in Hanoi, Thai Nguyen Province, and Tuyen Quang Province have issued warnings about cybercrimes using deepfake technology. The technology is also being used to create fake advertisements featuring celebrities like MC Quyen Linh and Doctor Truong Huu Khanh without their permission. The typical scam process involves collecting visual data from social media, gathering personal information, recording victims' voices through phone calls, then creating deepfake videos for fraudulent video calls to victims' contacts.
