Google's search algorithm featured an AI-generated fake Edward Hopper painting at the top of search results when users searched for the famous artist, misleading viewers about authentic art history.
When users searched for 'Edward Hopper' on Google, the search engine's algorithm featured an AI-generated image mimicking the artist's style as the top result instead of authentic Hopper paintings. The fake painting depicted a woman in a red dress looking out a window, created using a text-to-image AI system on Creative Fabrica's platform with the prompt 'a woman looking outside the window by Edward Hopper.' The AI-generated nature was detectable through visual flaws like bizarre-looking hands and forearms, areas where AI has historically struggled. UK-based illustrator Penny Neville-Lee first discovered and reported the incident on social media. The Creative Fabrica website clearly labeled the image as AI-generated and provided the prompt used to create it. Google's automated systems failed to distinguish between authentic artwork and AI-generated content, allowing the fake to rank higher than genuine Hopper paintings from prestigious institutions like the Met and Whitney museums. After the incident gained attention, Google acknowledged the issue and replaced the fake painting with an authentic portrait photo of Hopper. The incident highlights broader concerns about AI-generated content infiltrating search results and potentially distorting historical and cultural information as synthetic content becomes more prevalent online.
