Amazon's Kindle Unlimited bestseller list was flooded with dozens of AI-generated nonsense books that monetized the platform through click farming before Amazon removed them from the bestseller rankings.
On Monday and Tuesday, Amazon's Kindle Unlimited young adult romance bestseller list was filled with dozens of AI-generated books containing nonsense content. Indie author Caitlyn Lynch identified that out of the top 100 bestsellers in Teen & Young Adult Contemporary Romance eBooks, only 19 were legitimate books, with the rest being AI-generated nonsense designed for click farming. The AI books had titles like 'When the three attacks', 'Apricot bar code architecture', and 'wait you love me', with covers featuring simple images and neon text bars. One book that reached 90th place had two one-star reviews calling it a 'fake AI book'. The content was clearly AI-generated nonsense, with one book beginning 'Black lace pajamas, very short skirt, the most important thing, now this lace pajamas are all wet.' By Wednesday morning, Amazon had taken action and most books had fallen off the bestseller list, though they remained available for purchase and reading. Lynch warned this could severely impact legitimate writers' income through the KENP payout system, as AI-generated books with wider reach would reduce payments to real authors. Amazon stated they have clear content guidelines and investigate concerns promptly.
