David Tatum, a 41-year-old child psychiatrist in Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced to 40 years in prison followed by 30 years of supervised release for sexual exploitation of minors and using artificial intelligence to create child pornography. Between 2016 and 2021, Tatum possessed images and videos of child pornography and secretly recorded minors undressing and showering, including a 15-year-old cousin and other family members during a vacation in Maine. He also recorded one of his patients during an outpatient visit, who had turned 18 just five days prior. Additionally, Tatum used a web-based artificial intelligence application to digitally alter clothed images of minors, making them sexually explicit. Two specific examples mentioned were images from a school dance and a photo commemorating the first day of school. When caught in 2021, Tatum had over 1,000 child pornography titles. A federal jury convicted him in May 2024 of one count each of production, transportation, and possession of child pornography. The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood. Tatum was employed by Atrium Health from October 2016 to December 2021, and the health system confirmed no improper contact with their patients occurred.
