AI-generated deepfake videos of celebrities Tom Hanks, Gayle King, and MrBeast were used without consent in fraudulent advertisements promoting dental plans, weight loss products, and iPhone giveaways on social media platforms.
Multiple celebrities became victims of AI-generated deepfake advertisements in October 2023. Tom Hanks warned his 9.5 million Instagram followers on October 1st about a video promoting a dental plan using an AI version of his likeness without consent. On October 2nd, CBS Mornings host Gayle King alerted her followers about a manipulated video that used footage from her August 31st radio show promotion to falsely advertise weight loss products from a company called Artipet. YouTube personality MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) with 188 million followers also reported a deepfake scam ad on TikTok claiming viewers could win an iPhone 15 Pro for $2. The deepfakes used AI technology to manipulate existing footage, overlaying fake audio that didn't always match lip movements perfectly. Meta, Instagram's parent company, stated it was against their policies to run deceptive ads using public figures to scam people, and representatives for the celebrities requested removal of the fake videos. The incidents highlight growing concerns about AI-generated content being used for fraud, with experts noting the technology is rapidly improving and becoming harder to detect.
