The content spread rapidly across multiple platforms including Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram groups dedicated to creating non-consensual pornographic content. Swift's fanbase mobilized with the hashtag #ProtectTaylorSwift to flood social media with positive images and report accounts sharing the deepfakes. X temporarily blocked searches for Taylor Swift's name to prevent further spread. The incident highlighted the growing problem of non-consensual deepfake pornography, which research shows affects 96% of deepfake content online and disproportionately targets women. The case prompted calls from lawmakers for federal legislation criminalizing deepfake pornography, as only about 10 states currently have specific laws addressing this issue.
