Alleged Deepfake CFO Scam Reportedly Costs Multinational Engineering Firm Arup $25 Million

In January 2024, fraudsters used sophisticated deepfake technology to conduct an elaborate scam targeting a multinational company's Hong Kong branch. The scammers created convincing digital recreations of the company's UK-based chief financial officer and other employees using publicly available video and audio footage. A finance department employee initially received a suspicious message purporting to be from the CFO requesting a secret transaction, which he correctly identified as potentially fraudulent. However, the employee was then invited to a video conference call where he saw and heard what appeared to be the CFO and several familiar colleagues. All participants except the victim were deepfakes created using AI technology. During the call, the fake executives instructed the employee to make urgent money transfers. The employee, believing the participants were genuine based on their realistic appearance and voices, proceeded to make 15 separate transfers totaling HK$200 million (approximately $25.6 million USD) to five different Hong Kong bank accounts. The scam was discovered about a week later when the employee contacted the company's head office to follow up on the transactions. Hong Kong police confirmed this was the first deepfake video conference scam of its kind in the city involving such a large sum. The investigation is ongoing with no arrests made yet, and the company's identity has not been disclosed.
