Israeli forces used an AI-powered facial recognition system in Gaza to conduct mass surveillance and identify Palestinians, wrongly flagging poet Mosab Abu Toha as a Hamas operative, leading to his detention and interrogation for two days.
After the October 7 attacks, Israel deployed a facial recognition program in Gaza operated by Unit 8200 using technology from Israeli company Corsight and Google Photos. The system was initially designed to locate Israeli hostages but expanded to identify Hamas operatives and other militants. The program collected and cataloged Palestinian faces without consent through cameras at checkpoints and on soldiers' equipment. On November 19, Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha was identified by the system while trying to leave Gaza with his family. Despite having no ties to Hamas, he was flagged as a wanted person after someone from his town named him as a Hamas operative with no supporting intelligence. Abu Toha was detained, beaten, and interrogated for two days before being released when Israeli soldiers acknowledged the detention was a 'mistake.' The system generated false positives, wrongly identifying civilians as Hamas militants. Intelligence officers expressed concerns about the program being a misuse of resources. The technology enabled Israel to identify faces from crowds and drone footage, with Corsight requiring less than 50% of a face visible for recognition.
