In March 2024, Richmond-Burton Community High School in Richmond, Illinois discovered that AI-generated nude images had been created and circulated depicting students and staff. Two unnamed minors used AI tools to manipulate photos taken from social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, creating fake nude images of approximately 30 female students and 3 teachers. The incident came to light when 15-year-old Stevie Hyder discovered a manipulated image of herself based on her 2023 prom photo. School principal Mike Baird notified parents via email on March 11, 2024, and worked with Richmond Police Department on the investigation. The fake images were shared among the student body, causing significant emotional distress to victims who reported feeling violated and nauseous. Two minors were arrested in late April 2024 and charged in juvenile court - one facing 17 counts of child pornography and 2 counts of distribution of harmful materials to a minor, while the second faced 13 counts of child pornography and 4 additional child pornography charges. The case highlighted the ease of access to AI deepfake technology, with demonstrations showing such apps can create explicit images in just seconds.
