Multiple criminal cases in China involved using AI technology to create fake content and commit fraud, including AI-generated deepfake videos, voice synthesis for scams, and AI face-swapping to bypass identity verification systems.
Between April and June 2024, Chinese law enforcement agencies prosecuted multiple cases involving the criminal use of AI technology. In one case, Bai, a former internet company technician, used 'one-click undressing' AI technology to create nearly 7,000 deepfake pornographic images and sold them for over 10,000 yuan. In another case, Wang was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment (suspended for 5 years) for creating and selling AI game cheats that earned him 6.29 million yuan. A criminal gang used AI face-swapping and voice synthesis technology to impersonate Chinese female students abroad on dating apps, scamming over 50 victims for more than 1 million yuan. Tang used AI-generated fake fire videos of an industrial park in Shaoxing to create viral misinformation, posting over 3,000 fake videos since May 2024. Zeng used AI to create dynamic face images to bypass facial recognition systems and illegally access government apps to download business licenses, creating over 1,000 fake face images and earning over 90,000 yuan. The cases demonstrate how AI technology is being exploited for fraud, misinformation, and privacy violations across multiple domains.
