Between July 2020 and August 2022, Andrew Thomas Hayler, a 38-year-old Sydney bartender, used AI technology to create deepfake pornographic images of 26 women he knew personally, including close friends, former housemates, and colleagues. Hayler superimposed the women's faces onto explicit pornographic content and uploaded hundreds of these altered images to a pornography website with over 300,000 members. The posts included violent rape fantasies, graphic descriptions of sexual assault, and polls asking how viewers would like to 'destroy' the women. Hayler also published the victims' full names, occupations, suburbs, and social media handles alongside the images. The crimes were discovered when Hannah Grundy, one of the primary victims, received anonymous emails from a New Zealand private investigator who had found the content while investigating an unrelated case. After police initially failed to act, Grundy and her partner spent nearly $20,000 on legal fees and a forensic computing expert to build a case. Police raided Hayler's home in August 2022, finding folders of photographs on his devices. Hayler pleaded guilty to 28 counts of using a carriage service to cause offence and was sentenced to nine years in prison with a non-parole period of five and a half years in June 2024.
