Scammers used AI voice replication technology to impersonate a business owner's voice, deceiving an employee into following fraudulent instructions that resulted in compromised bank details and monetary losses for Sugar and Dice game store.
Sugar and Dice, a game and coffee store located in the Holiday Village Mall in Havre, was targeted by a sophisticated phone scam utilizing AI voice replication technology. The scammers contacted an employee on his personal cell phone, spoofing both the employee's and the store owner Kevin Zorn's phone numbers. During the call, the employee heard what he believed was Zorn's voice, which sounded authentic due to AI voice cloning technology. The fake voice assured the employee there was a warrant and instructed him to follow specific directions. The employee, believing he was protecting the business and his boss, complied with the fraudulent instructions. This resulted in the compromise of the store's bank details and caused monetary losses to the business. Zorn stated he does not blame the employee for the incident and commended his loyalty. The store owner indicated that business operations would continue and the store would recover from the financial impact.
