Twenty-five Canadian nationals operating from Montreal call centers used technology to impersonate grandchildren in distress to elderly Americans, defrauding hundreds of victims across 46 states of over $21 million between 2021 and 2024.
Between summer 2021 and June 2024, 25 Canadian nationals operated an elaborate 'grandparent scam' from call centers in and around Montreal, Quebec. The defendants used technology to make their calls appear to originate from the United States while targeting elderly Americans in 46 states. They would falsely claim to be grandchildren who had been arrested after car crashes and needed bail money, often telling victims there was a 'gag order' preventing them from discussing the situation with other family members. Other conspirators posed as attorneys representing the supposed relatives. Victims were convinced to provide money to individuals posing as bail bondsmen who came to their homes, or to mail money to abandoned addresses. The collected funds were transmitted to Canada through cash deliveries and sometimes cryptocurrency to obscure the money's source. Prosecutors say the scheme defrauded hundreds of elderly victims out of more than $21 million. When Canadian law enforcement executed search warrants at the call centers on June 4, 2024, many defendants were found actively making calls to elderly victims in Virginia. The operation used spreadsheets containing victims' personal information including age and household income, and referred to victims who provided substantial amounts as 'whales.' All 25 defendants were charged with conspiracy to defraud, while five who managed the call centers also face money laundering charges.
