AI-generated synthetic audio was used to create a fake video of Turkish President Erdogan expressing support for imprisoned former Pakistani PM Imran Khan during his 2025 Pakistan visit, spreading misinformation across social media platforms.
In February 2025, a fabricated video circulated on social media showing Turkish President Erdogan allegedly addressing Pakistan's National Assembly and expressing wishes to meet imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The video combined authentic footage from Erdogan's 2020 visit to Pakistan with AI-generated synthetic audio. The fake audio featured Erdogan saying he wished Imran Khan was present and hoped to shake hands with him in the future. The video was posted on Facebook by user 'Sardar Umair Ibrahim PTi' on February 15, 2025, and gained over 10,000 views. It spread across multiple social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter), with some posts receiving hundreds of thousands of views. Pakistani journalist Sami Abraham also created content based on the false claim, garnering over 175,000 YouTube views. Fact-checkers from Soch Fact Check investigated and confirmed the audio was synthetic using multiple AI detection tools including DeepFake-O-Meter, Hive Moderation, and Hiya's Deepfake Voice Detector, which showed 96.2%, 57%, and 99% likelihood of being AI-generated respectively. Audio analysis by experts revealed artificial characteristics including constant frequency patterns and artificial reverb typical of synthetic generation. Erdogan never addressed Pakistan's National Assembly during his actual February 2025 visit.
