In May 2025, Brazilian authorities arrested a 24-year-old man in Santa Helena de Goiás as part of Operation VoiceOver, led by the Special Police Station for Repression of Cybercrimes (DRCC). The suspect used deepfake technology to create realistic videos featuring popular television host Marcos Mion falsely announcing promotions for the Outback restaurant chain. These AI-generated videos were designed to appear authentic and were widely circulated through social media platforms and messaging applications. Victims who believed the videos were part of an official marketing campaign were directed to fraudulent websites that closely mimicked the legitimate Outback restaurant sites. On these fake websites, victims purchased discount vouchers that were never delivered. During the investigation, law enforcement executed search and seizure warrants across the Federal District and Goiás, confiscating computers, mobile phones, and digital documents, while also blocking the suspect's bank accounts. The suspect confessed to his involvement in creating and maintaining the fraudulent websites during interrogation. He faces charges of electronic fraud, criminal association, and money laundering, with a potential maximum sentence of 21 years in prison. The operation represents the second phase of investigations that began in January 2025, highlighting the increasing use of deepfake technology in cybercrime schemes.
