Hong Kong police arrested eight people for using deepfake technology to merge scammers' facial features with photos on stolen identity cards to bypass bank verification systems and fraudulently open 44 bank accounts.
Between April 7 and 17, Hong Kong police conducted a citywide crackdown on scams, cybercrime and money laundering, arresting 503 people aged 18 to 80 with losses exceeding HK$1.5 billion (US$193.2 million). Eight suspects were specifically arrested for using deepfake AI technology to fraudulently open bank accounts. The syndicate obtained at least 21 Hong Kong identity cards reported as lost between 2023 and 2024, then used AI to merge scammers' facial features with the original cardholders' photos or simply replaced the photos entirely. They uploaded these fabricated images along with scammers' selfies to impersonate cardholders and bypass online bank verification processes. Of 44 applications submitted, 30 were successful - half using AI-merged images and half using simple photo replacements. The fraudulent accounts were used to apply for loans and make credit card purchases totaling HK$860,000, plus launder over HK$1.2 million in suspected criminal proceeds. Six men and two women aged 24-41 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering, with the mastermind and core members allegedly belonging to local triad gangs. Police confiscated phones, computers and storage devices during the operation.
