In August 2023, at Sixth Ward Middle School in Thibodaux, Louisiana, AI-generated nude images were created of eight female middle school students and two adults. The fake images circulated on Snapchat and became widespread among students, causing relentless teasing and bullying. A 13-year-old victim and her friends reported the images to a school guidance counselor and sheriff's deputy, but adults initially couldn't locate the images due to Snapchat's disappearing message feature. The principal expressed skepticism about their existence. When the victim saw a boy showing the fake nude images on the school bus, she physically attacked him, leading to her expulsion for 89 school days and assignment to an alternative school. The school district had no specific policies addressing AI-generated content and used outdated 2018 cyberbullying curriculum. Three weeks after the fight, two boys were charged under Louisiana's new law against unlawful dissemination of AI-generated images, but the girl faced no criminal charges. The victim experienced depression, anxiety, missed academic work, and was excluded from extracurricular activities including basketball tryouts.
