A married couple in Samsun, Turkey was defrauded of approximately 1.5 million Turkish lira after believing in AI-generated investment videos they encountered on Facebook.
In the Ilkadim district of Samsun, Turkey, a married couple - 53-year-old Isa Kereci, who works as a scrap collector, and his wife 48-year-old Hale Kereci, a mother of four - fell victim to a fraud scheme after clicking on an advertisement on Facebook. The fraudsters used AI-generated investment videos to deceive the couple. The scam began with small amounts but escalated through various justifications including 'file costs', 'insurance fees', 'tax debt', and 'Central Bank transfer'. The perpetrators had the couple share their screens and made money transfers from their bank accounts and credit cards to different individuals. During this process, the couple took out uninsured loans, depleted their savings accounts, made credit card purchases, sold their gold, and borrowed money from relatives. In total, approximately 1.5 million Turkish lira fell into the hands of the fraudsters. After the incident, the couple went to Samsun Courthouse and filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office. They warned other citizens to be careful against similar advertisements. Hale Kereci was seen crying in front of the courthouse.
