A Congress leader in India was charged for sharing an AI-generated photograph on Facebook that falsely depicted Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan with a gold theft suspect.
The Kozhikode City police registered a case against N. Subrahmanian, a senior Congress leader and KPCC Political Affairs Committee member, for allegedly sharing an AI-generated photograph on Facebook. The digitally altered image depicted Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan alongside Sabarimala gold theft suspect Unnikrishnan Potti. Subrahmanian accompanied the AI-generated image with a caption that insinuated a connection between the Chief Minister and the accused. Police sources confirmed that one of the circulated images was created using artificial intelligence tools. The case was filed at Chevayur police station based on a complaint that the content was intended to provoke conflict and promote enmity between different groups. Subrahmanian has been booked under Sections 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 120 of the Kerala Police Act. The incident represents the misuse of AI-generated content for political purposes with potential to cause social discord.
