Scammers used AI-generated deepfake videos featuring celebrities and doctors to promote fake medical treatments on social media, defrauding consumers who purchased ineffective products.
Scammers created AI-generated deepfake videos featuring celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Clarkson, and real doctors to promote fake medical treatments on social media platforms like Facebook. The fraudulent advertisements claimed miraculous cures for conditions like lipedema, diabetes, and hypertension. One victim, Beth Holland, was deceived by a deepfake video featuring her own doctor Dr. David Amron promoting a fake lipedema cream called 'Svelta Venastra' that claimed 96% effectiveness based on tests of 11,532 women. Holland purchased six bottles for $300 but received an ineffective product. The scammers also created fake FDA certificates of compliance and promoted non-existent liquid GLP-1 medications. Al Roker from TODAY was also targeted with a deepfake promoting a fake hypertension cure. According to cybersecurity expert Yoav Keren, these medical fraud scams generate billions of dollars and are often traced to shell companies in East Asia. Meta stated they use celebrity facial recognition technology to remove deepfakes, and the specific lipedema cream ad was removed from Facebook. The FTC warns that consumers are increasingly targeted by these scams, which can delay proper medical treatment and expose people to unsafe products.
