AI-generated deepfakes of consumer financial expert Clark Howard were posted on social media to fraudulently sell car insurance products, deceiving viewers who believed they were seeing legitimate endorsements.
AI-created deepfake videos featuring consumer financial expert Clark Howard were posted on social media platforms to sell insurance products. In the fraudulent video, the AI-generated Howard appeared to recommend a tool for finding cheaper car insurance, stating 'Zero fees, zero catch. You just answer a few questions about your car, and it pulls your real rate.' The real Clark Howard expressed concern about the deceptive nature of these videos, noting how difficult it is to distinguish real content from AI-generated fakes. One resident, Dianne Milton from Kennesaw, was initially deceived and believed the deepfake was genuine until contacted by news media. Milton had previously interacted with similar websites and reported receiving numerous unwanted calls from insurance companies without finding better deals. The incident follows a pattern of AI-generated deepfakes being used for deceptive purposes, including a November incident where deepfakes of Senator Jon Ossoff were used in political advertising. Howard warned that consumers must now be vigilant about potentially fraudulent AI-generated endorsements, as the technology makes it increasingly easy to create convincing fake content.
