Four individuals in India used AI-generated deepfake videos to bypass biometric authentication systems, fraudulently changing Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers to access financial services and apply for loans in victims' names.
The Cyber Cell of Crime Branch Ahmedabad arrested four persons for orchestrating an identity fraud racket using deepfake technology and illegally accessing Aadhaar-linked biometric systems. The fraud was discovered when Ahmedabad businessman Amit Patel found his Aadhaar-linked mobile number had been changed without his knowledge. The perpetrators used AI-generated deepfake videos created from victims' photographs to simulate blinking and facial movements, successfully fooling facial authentication systems during Aadhaar update procedures. The four arrested individuals included CSC operators Kanubhai Bahadursinh Parmar (32) from Anand district, Ashish Rajendrabhai Waland (27) from Vadodara, Mohammad Kaif Iqbalbhai Patel (26) from Bharuch district, and Deep Maheshbhai Gupta (29) from Ahmedabad. They used unauthorized Aadhaar update kits operated through Common Service Centre operators to change mobile numbers linked to victims' Aadhaar cards. Once access was gained, they used the compromised credentials to access DigiLocker, conduct KYC verification, open bank accounts, and apply for personal loans through digital lending platforms including RKBansal, True Credits and EarlySalary. Police recovered the Aadhaar update kit used in the fraud and noted that one accused had previously been involved in fake Aadhaar card preparation. The investigation is ongoing to identify additional victims and perpetrators.
