A woman in Guelph, Ontario lost $14,000 to scammers who used AI-generated deepfake content impersonating YouTube creator Mr. Beast to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme.
Police in Guelph, Ontario reported that a woman fell victim to a cryptocurrency investment scam that used AI-generated deepfake content. The victim initially saw a social media advertisement that appeared to show popular YouTube content creator Mr. Beast (Jimmy Donaldson) promoting an investment opportunity. She initially paid $250 to join the investment scheme, then continued to send more money as the scam progressed. At one point, she believed she spoke to Mr. Beast himself on the phone, who encouraged her to invest $5,000 in a cryptocurrency wallet address he provided. In total, the woman lost $14,000 to the fraudulent scheme. Police noted that residents should be wary of celebrity endorsements that can be easily faked with artificial intelligence. Mr. Beast has previously addressed the issue of AI-generated deepfake advertisements using his likeness, calling it 'a serious problem' in October 2023 after an AI-generated video showed him offering to give people iPhones in exchange for $2. The incident highlights the growing problem of AI-generated content being used for fraudulent purposes.
