The FBI director posted a promotional video using AI-generated clips that recreated scenes from the Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' music video without authorization, receiving approximately 500,000 views.
FBI Director Kash Patel posted a promotional video on X (Twitter) on Monday that used AI to generate clips nearly identical to scenes from the Beastie Boys' 1994 'Sabotage' music video. The roughly two-minute video promoted the FBI's efforts to combat 'massive fraud' and used the instrumental version of 'Sabotage' along with AI-generated footage interspersed with authentic FBI agent footage. By Tuesday, the video had received approximately half a million views. NPR's analysis identified at least six clips that were frame-by-frame recreations of shots from the original Spike Jonze-directed music video, featuring vehicles, people and buildings incredibly similar to the original but with small differences characteristic of AI generation. Experts who reviewed the video confirmed the clips were likely AI-generated, with visible artifacts such as telephone lines appearing to go through a character's head and distortions in license plates. The clips were likely created by feeding screenshots or short clips from the original video into an image-to-video AI model. Neither representatives for Spike Jonze and the Beastie Boys nor the FBI responded to NPR's requests for comment about the video and how it was made.
