Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok debuted an image generation tool that lacked safety guardrails, leading to a flood of offensive AI-generated images of political figures and celebrities on X.
In August 2024, Elon Musk's xAI company released Grok-2, the latest version of its AI chatbot, which included a new image generation capability for paid subscribers of X (formerly Twitter). The image generator lacked most safety guardrails that have become standard in the AI industry, allowing users to create controversial and potentially harmful content. Users generated images depicting Donald Trump flying a plane into the World Trade Center, the prophet Muhammad holding a bomb, and female politicians and celebrities like Taylor Swift, Kamala Harris, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in lingerie. The system also created images of copyrighted Disney characters in offensive situations, such as Mickey Mouse saluting Adolf Hitler and Donald Duck using heroin. While Grok refused to generate fully nude images and some violent political content, it inconsistently applied these restrictions. The lack of content moderation led to concerns about misinformation, copyright infringement, and harassment. Experts noted that competing AI image generators like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini have stricter policies prohibiting depictions of real people, violence, and copyrighted characters. The incident highlighted the challenges of balancing AI capabilities with responsible deployment and raised questions about legal liability for the platform.
